Ontario-Based Howes and Reeves Becomes First Authorized Dealer to Offer Entire

Hurst Performance Vehicles Expands Dealer Network Into Canada

Posted October 20 2010 09:14 AM by Evan Smith

Irvine, Calif. (October 20, 2010) - Hurst Performance Vehicles, a company known for producing iconic iterations of modern day muscle cars, announced today that it is expanding its authorized dealer network to include Canada, with the addition of Howes and Reeves Limited, a Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge dealership based in Fergus, Ontario.

The announcement follows recent news from Hurst regarding the opening of the Hurst Speed Shop and Hurst Garage; further embodying Hurst's commitment to expanding its reach and making its authorized parts, accessories and vehicles available to enthusiasts around the world.

Initially, Howes and Reeves Limited will begin by offering a variety of individual Hurst branded accessories and performance parts for Mopar applications, as well as completed Hurst Series 1 Challengers. Beyond its initial offerings, the Canadian dealer will sell turn-key versions of the popular Hurst Camaro, and finally branch out to include Hurst Mustangs later this fall. For customers who desire a higher level of performance and customization, Howes and Reeves will facilitate the shipment of customer vehicles directly to Hurst headquarters for modification to specialty and/or Series 4 or 5 specifications at the Hurst Garage in Irvine, Calif.

The decision to expand retail sales to Canada came after careful discussion and vocal interest from enthusiasts north of the border.  A life long enthusiast and fan of the Hurst brand, Howes and Reeves President Terry Reeves, seemed to be a natural choice for Hurst executives when approached by the dealer principal.

"Howes and Reeves is unique in that they have over 130 years of sales experience as a dealer, first with wagons, then selling and servicing automobiles," said Hurst Chairman Nate Shelton. "In that time, they've built a reputation for not only excellent customer service, but also an attention to detail, both made possible by great people."

Currently, Hurst Series 1 kits for Canadian Challengers are sent to the Fergus, Ontario location for final completion. Parts are installed to the same exacting standards as the cars leaving Hurst's Irvine, California headquarters. Similarly, clients receive a unique dash-mounted plaque and individually signed certificate of authenticity recognizing the vehicle as being Hurst Factory Modified.  Just as with the Southern California cars, pictures are taken throughout the build process and the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is catalogued to be included in the Hurst registry securing the car's provenance and collectability.

"We've already completed a couple of these Hurst Challengers and they've been received quite well," said Reeves and Howe President Terry Reeves. "The hobbyists up here love seeing the cars at their local cruise nights and there is genuine demand in the market."

AUBURN Hills, Mich. - Chrysler Group LLC announced Thursday that it will invest US$600 million in its Belvidere, Ill., Assembly Plant for the production of future models in 2012, increasing its investments in U.S. facilities to $2.1 billion since the formation of the new company in June 2009.

The investment includes the construction of a 638,000 square-foot body shop as well as the installation of new machinery, tooling and material handling equipment. Work on the expansion began this summer and will be completed in 2011.

"We want to thank Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, Illinois Congressman Don Manzullo and Belvidere Mayor Frederic Brereton for working with us to make this investment possible," said Scott Garberding, senior vice-president and head of manufacturing at Chrysler.

"With their help, the Belvidere Assembly Plant will be expanded and retooled in order to build the next generation of vehicles that will meet the needs of our customers."

The Belvidere assembly plant is currently a two-shift operation, employing 2,349 workers who assemble the Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot and Dodge Caliber.

"This investment recognizes the support of the UAW and the role that our skilled and dedicated workforce has played in producing some of the finest vehicles on the road today," said Garberding. "Through the implementation of World Class Manufacturing, Belvidere is transforming itself to become one of the safest and most efficient assembly plants."

General Holiefield, vice-president of the UAW, said the "investment, along with the strong relationship between our two organizations, will contribute to the future success of Chrysler, our employees and the products we so proudly build."

Jodi Tinson, Chrysler spokeswoman, would not comment on "future models" however there is industry-wide consensus that the plant will build the next generation of Fiat-based vehicles.

The Fiat 500 minicar, which is being assembled at Toluca, Mexico, is expected to reach showrooms in the U.S. and Canada in January. Chrysler is in the process of establishing the Fiat dealership network in North America.

Chrysler lining up dealers to sell Fiat

Associated Press / October 21, 2010

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Chrysler Group LLC is starting to pick dealers to sell Fiats in the United States when the Italian-designed cars start arriving in December.

The automaker said yesterday that it wants Fiat dealers in 119 US markets - mostly in areas that have a high number of small-car registrations - and will name more dealers by year's end. It would not say how many dealers have been selected because the dealers have not yet been notified.

Chrysler, which is now controlled by Italy's Fiat, previously said it hoped to have 165 Fiat stores in the United States by early 2011, with the ultimate goal of having 200 locations.

The company wants the Fiat 500 minicar to become a strong contender in the US small-car market, where Chrysler has struggled for years. It would be sold mainly in metropolitan areas where subcompacts are easier to maneuver and park than larger cars.

Some Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep dealers chosen will build new facilities while others will convert buildings into dealerships. Chrysler said it has also received Fiat proposals from dealers outside the company and is now reviewing their bids.

Chrysler Group LLC has begun appointing dealers that will represent the Fiat brand in Canada and the United States, the automaker announced Wednesday.

The dealers appointed in this first phase have plans in place and will be ready to take orders for the iconic Fiat 500 subcompact, Chrysler said.

Chrysler Canada is continuing to follow a process similar to the U.S., said Mary Gauthier, spokeswoman for the Canadian subsidiary. "We have already issued a number of letters of intent in Canada to prospective Fiat dealers and should be in a position to announce our initial Fiat dealers in Canada in the next few weeks."

She said "the interest in Canada for Fiat from both dealers and potential customers continues to exceed our expectations."

Chrysler Group continues to work with some American dealers on their proposals and will name additional Fiat dealers by the end of the year. In all, Chrysler Group would like to have Fiat dealers in 119 markets in the U.S., mostly in areas chosen for their high concentration of small-car registrations.

Chrysler Group's Fiat dealer selection team has spent the last few weeks reviewing proposals from existing Chrysler Group dealers who want to add the Fiat franchise to their brand portfolio. The dealers provided detailed facility, marketing, sales and service plans in their proposals.

"We have carefully considered each of these dealer proposals looking for the best locations and the most creative plans," said Peter Grady, Chrysler's vice-president of Network Development and Fleet Operations. "We are thrilled with their level of interest in securing the Fiat franchise and in the innovative proposals they have submitted. We're excited to be at the point where we now can start appointing our Fiat dealer network."

"We are looking for a customer experience that is as unique and personalized as the Fiat 500 itself," said Laura Soave, Head of Fiat Brand North America. "Some of the proposals are extremely creative and in many cases not only met but exceeded our expectations. We are looking forward to working with our dealer team for the successful launch of the Fiat Brand in the United States and offering our customers the personal experience that they deserve in our Fiat Studios."

Chrysler said some dealers will build new state-of-the art facilities, while others plan to convert on-site used car and other buildings into Fiat dealerships. Some dealers will purchase former auto dealerships, while others are snapping up empty retail stores in their markets.

Chrysler also is considering proposals from dealers outside its network that have shown  "great interest in securing the Fiat franchise," the automaker said.

Chrysler ramps up production of Belvidere trio

Workers at Chrysler Group LLC's Belvidere assembly plant turned out the most Dodge Calibers, Jeep Compasses and Jeep Patriots since June, producing 17,669 vehicles in September.

Interestingly, the company had workers churn out 5,503 Jeep Compasses, the highest monthly total for that model since June 2008. The Compass is averaging about 3,150 sales worldwide each month.

The number of orders did not keep up with production. Sales dipped to 15,292 worldwide, down nearly 1,000 from August but still the third-best total for the year. The Caliber was the top seller of the Belvidere trio, 6,628, compared with the Patriot, 5,778.

Sales increased from August in the company's Canada and international markets. In fact, dealers outside North America had their best month moving the Caliber, Compass and Patriot since September 2008. But it wasn't enough to make up for the decline in Mexico and the U.S.

More than 2,300 people work at the Belvidere plant on two shifts. Chrysler is discontinuing the Caliber, Compass and Patriot in 2012 and replacing them with models designed by Fiat SpA, which now runs Chrysler. Workers have started on a 500,000-square-foot expansion of the body shop to support the new products.
